Art Education at the Essl Museum

Team Kunstvermittlung Essl Museum

Comprehensive art education activities are offered to visitors of all ages and walks of life. They include guided tours, art talks, workshops, projects, seminars, training events and receptions. In addition, tailor-made education offers are developed exclusively for the staff members of bauMax and the Essl Museum. A specific method of promoting art comprehension at the Essl Museum is a combination of talks in front of original artworks and hands-on testing of the visitors’ own creativity at the museum art studio. This approach was developed on the basis of the specificities of the collection.

A particular focus concerns long-term education offers for groups that regularly visit the museum (cf. Caritas patronage, education activities for apprentices, etc.).

Apart from their educators’ activities the team also takes on editorial work, such as creating texts for exhibitions, catalogues and artists’ biographies. In order to ensure close co-operation between curators and art educators and a seamless flow of information within the team, there is always one art educator responsible for each exhibition, which also includes curatorial input in co-operation with the art collectors when deciding about the presentation of the collection.

Since the inauguration of the Museum in 1999, the team has been collaborating closely with their colleagues at the Museum and has acquired detailed and profound expertise about the content of the collection. This is a special characteristic and also a valuable resource of the Art Education Department at the Essl Museum.
